Advanced configuration of the Frandum client

Once you are familiar with the windows, you may want to reorganise them and display additional ones: this section deals with this kind of configuration.

Moving and configuring windows

Windows are grouped in areas allowing docking several tabs:

Tabs

To display a window within an area, simply click on its name in the area bar.

You may move windows from one area to another by dragging and dropping their name from one area to the other.

Areas can be resized any way you like by clicking and moving your mouse on the separators between them:

You may also create new areas by dragging and dropping a window on the border of any area:

Creating a new area

Eventually, you may close a window you have no use for by clicking on the cross in its upper-right corner. Don’t worry: you will be able to open it again using the menus.

Menus and icons

The icon bar gives you quick access to all available client windows:

Icons bar

To display a window, simply click on its icon.

The Window menu also contains shortcut used for opening windows:

Window menu

The file menu will allow you to disconnect from the game and reconnect if you have been disconnected for any reason or want to play with another character: reconnect will open again the login dialog for you to enter the name and password of your character.

The help menu displays a link to the online help (the one you are currently reading) and allows you to display the configuration screen.

Large world map

Among the available windows is a larger version of the world map working on the same principles as the smaller one yet showing you more details regarding the geography of the world (screenshot not included, you can see it in the maps section). You may use the arrow in the top-right corner of the large world map to switch the painted map from the physical map (displaying forests, mountains, rivers...) to the political map (displaying kingdoms and cities and which should be useful to go where people ask you to).

Secondary output windows

Besides the main output window, there exist two specialized windows that will display specific messages:

  • The map window will display all the maps you ask of the game (through the cmap, map, rmap and fmap commands)
  • The conversation window will display all things said, told, shouted or otherwise communicated to and by you

Once you open either of these windows, the corresponding messages will stop being displayed in the main output window and start being displayed in the corresponding windows (and reciprocally when you close them).

Colour pick

If you want to customize the colours used in the output windows, you may read the “help colour” of the game, yet in order to facilitate the selection of hexadecimal colours you may use the colour pick available to you in the input window:

Simply use it to append a hexadecimal colour code to your current input when using the "colour" command.

Example: to configure your colour for room names to red, type "colour FF0000 1" (1 being the colour number for room names, FF0000 being the hexadecimal red/green/blue representation of red)

Images and sounds configuration

Through the help menu, you can open the configuration window through which you will be able to:

  • Configure the size (in pixels) of icons displayed for rooms, things, mobiles, suns and spells (from 0 to 30 pixels). If you use 0, no images will be displayed for this type.
  • Configure the relative volume of sound effects and ambiance sounds (from 0 to 100). Obviously use 0 if you want to disable sounds of a given type

Preferences

A button is available to reset the settings to their default values.

Clearing it out

If you play for a long time the client may take more and more time to display text and images to you: this is due to the fact that all the text and images sent to you since connection are kept in its memory. If this happens, you can use the "Clear" menu from the main output window:

Clear menu

If for any reason you have an issue with the client you may close it: if you do so without typing "quit" from the game or using the "Disconnect" menu, your character will remain in play for some time. You may then launch the client again or connect through a simpler telnet to resume playing.
